The Fritz-Haber-Institut (FHI) in Berlin-Dahlem is one of the most renowned institutes within the Max Planck Society (MPG), Germany's organization for basic research. At the FHI, scientists from all over the world are engaged in fundamental studies in the field of chemical physics at interfaces and surfaces, catalysis research and molecular physics.
In the Liquid Microjet group (PI: Dr. Bernd Winter, https://www.fhi.mpg.de/209380/Liquid-Jets) at the Department of Molecular Physics (MP) we have pioneered the technique of photoemission spectroscopy for research on the electronic structure and dynamics of liquids, most prominently aqueous solutions.
Within the ERC-funded project AQUACHIRAL we will add sensitivity on the chirality of hydrated molecules to photoelectron spectroscopy, with immediate relevance to biochemistry and chemical reaction science.
Here we are offering a
In your work, you will demonstrate the influence of the handedness of organic molecules (amino acids, sugars) on their photoemission properties, thus establishing a novel technique, liquid-phase photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD), for research on chirality in aqueous solutions.
