Development Scientist/Engineer (f/m/d) for Micro-/Nanofabrication of Atomic Force Microscopy Probes

The Helmholtz Young Investigator research group Nanoscale Operando CO2 Photo-Electrocatalysis Studies the local structural, electrical, and catalytic properties of functional materials under reaction conditions to innovate applications in catalysis and energy conversion. As a development scientist/engineer in our team you will drive the development, micro/nanofabrication and characterization of sensing probes used in atomic force microscopy (AFM). This role will involve close collaboration with internal and external groups as well as industry partners and require strong initiative, effective cross-functional teamwork, a hands-on approach, and a high level of technical expertise. Your workplace will be at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and Fritz-Haber-Institut - Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Department of Interface Science.
YOUR TASKS
- You will specify engineering requirements for tailored AFM probes.
- You will design advanced AFM probes and their fabrication process.
- You will be responsible for the hands-on fabrication and characterization of prototypes.
- You will work closely with internal and external collaborators.
- You will work on innovative research projects that involve instrumentation, experiment design and R&D.
- You will support us in reviewing the patent landscape and in writing patent disclosures and applications.
- You will write technical and market analysis reports.
YOUR PROFILE
- A minimum of 5 years related experience with a bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry, mechanical or electrical engineering with an emphasis on scanning probe microscopy and/or micro-electro-mechanical systems, or 3 years and a master’s degree, or a relevant PhD
- Proven track record in the preparation of thin films and their physical-chemical characterization
- Experience in scanning probe microscopy
- Additional experience in one or more of the following areas will be beneficial: electrochemistry, microfabrication processes, conception of electric systems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Excellent problem-solving skills, committed to quality and high attention to detail
- Experience in navigating innovative R&D projects involving the development and work with advanced instrumentation

Fixed term contract for 24 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).
